zu + demzumIch gehe zum Arzt.
zu + derzurIch gehe zur Schule.
von + demvomIch komme vom Bahnhof.
bei + dembeimIch bin beim Arzt.

These contractions are standard and expected in spoken and written German.

Tips

  1. Memorize the core seven: mit, von, zu, bei, nach, seit, aus — these are by far the most common.
  2. Masculine and neuter share the same dative form: dem / einem.
  3. Feminine dative = der — don't confuse it with masculine nominative "der"!
  4. Always add -n to plural nouns in dative (unless they end in -n or -s).
  5. Use contractions (zum, zur, vom, beim) — they sound more natural than the full forms.
